Remote Desktop Access for Windows and Mac

With NoMachine Server, users can now connect to their remote Windows, Mac, Linux and Solaris desktops from anywhere over the network. NoMachine Server is a complete solution that installs the client, node and server software, plus a small web server to serve NoMachine Web Player and NoMachine Server Manager, to set up the environment without the need for any further configuration.

NoMachine Server Manager allows administrators to perform a variety of operations on the server, including:

  • See information about the subscription file
  • Check status of NoMachine services
  • Start and stop sessions
  • Retrieve session logs

Administrators can also incorporate the Windows or Mac machine as a remote node into a multi-node architecture managed by a single entry point, the NoMachine Enterprise Server.

For Windows, users can remotely log in by means of the SSHD daemon included in the Nomachine Server installation package. Users are presented with the Windows log-in screen in order to get access to the desired account. Otherwise, if they are already logged, they will automatically see their personalized Windows desktop. For Mac, users authenticate by means of the SSHD daemon installed on the Mac. If a user is not logged in to the Mac desktop, he/she is able to access the login screen and access the Mac desktop with his/her preferred account.

Once logged in, the NoMachine node runs the NoMachine agent, which is in charge of grabbing the current content of the remote screen by using the graphics Windows API and sending it to the connected client (e.g., NoMachine Player, NoMachine Web Player). Similar to Windows, the NoMachine agent interfaces with the system Mac OS X API for grabbing the screen and handling input and clipboard data.

The NoMachine agent is also in charge of forwarding the user's input to the desktop and handling copy/paste operations to permit transferring of clipboard data to and from the remote desktop. Data traffic is optimized by sending only those portions of the screen that are actually changed to the user's client. These changed areas are sent through the network as images are compressed.

Functionalities available with the NoMachine Server for Windows and Mac include:
  • File transfer
  • Printing support from remote to local
  • Copy and Paste
  • Audio
