Rome, Italy, Feb. 24, 2010 – Mosaic, a non-profit charity
organization serving more than 3,500 adults and children with
intellectual disabilities, has completed a four year project of
converting their Windows network to a fully supported Linux environment
with the deployment of NoMachine's NX technology, the world-renowned
hosted desktop and application delivery software. NX is a critical part
of this project and provides Mosaic employees across the country access
to Linux server farms at Mosaic's headquarters.
For this
migration project, Mosaic deploys “high-function” thin clients serving
as Ubuntu workstations to maintain client-side functionality and
processing power to allow employees access to locally-installed basic
functionalities when working off the network. NX was chosen as the
server-based application delivery method for employees to access
documents and perform all job-related, data processing activities on NX
Server farms.
NX provides a user-friendly solution allowing
Mosaic to reduce costs, improve performance and guarantee the security
of HIPAA data. NX drastically reduces expenditure for Mosaic, providing
low overall cost compared to other solutions on the market and reduces
hardware cost allowing for the reutilization of their old PCs as
“high-function” thin clients.
The adoption of NX for this
conversion to hosted Linux desktops has also greatly improved the
performance and speed of remote sessions since very little bandwidth is
required per user. Due to NX's unique compression, Mosaic has been able
to greatly increase the number of concurrent users from each facility,
without affecting the quality of local network connectivity. Using the
NX Advanced Server and NX Advanced Server Nodes allows Mosaic to easily
balance their sessions and add nodes increasing session resiliency,
server response time and resource utilization.
Serving nearly 250
communities in the US and with partner programs in several foreign
countries, ensuring the security of medical records and data across
the network is a necessity for Mosaic. NX allows Mosaic to meet all
HIPAA requirements with SSH encryption, guaranteeing the privacy of the
health information across any network.
All agencies from
Arizona to the headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska were included in this
migration, with the last remote agency in Connecticut being migrated in
November 2009. The transition has now been finalized and all 40 offices
throughout the country are successfully running their applications on
the new NX solution.
There have been approximately 1,500 total NX
users and nearly 500 concurrent users at any given time. Feedback from
NX users at Mosaic has been overwhelmingly positive as they realize the
true power of collaboration and the convenience of having ready access
to their data from anywhere. Even as staff travel to international
destinations, they can still connect to the system and access the
central NX Server cluster instantly.
“The NoMachine NX Client and
NX Server implementations have been key to our project success,” says
data storage and security administrator for the Mosaic National Office,
Thomas Keown. “With NX, we have centralized our massive amount of data
and are now provided the control, back-up and security we require to
meet HIPAA requirements. The costs are relatively minimal, but more
importantly, NX technology has worked flawlessly from the beginning.”
