NoMachine NX implements a standard compliant X server on the NX server side. This virtual X server accomplishes the task of encoding the X11 protocol efficiently and forwarding the output to the client, therefore all applications that use the X-Window protocol for displaying their output should work with NX without modifications. Given the wide range of X-Window extensions, differences in implementations of toolkits and middleware libraries and the inherent technical challenge of deploying X-Window applications efficiently over the Internet, NoMachine NX may or may not work with the applications that are important for you. NoMachine NX currently supports the following applications:

    1. Mozilla Firefox
    2. Mozilla Thunderbird
    3. Sun OpenOffice/StarOffice
    4. Novell Evolution
    5. The KDE desktop and Konqueror browser and file manager
    6. The GNOME desktop and Nautilus file manager
    7. The CDE desktop and most Motif applications
    8. Most GNOME/GTK applications
    9. Most KDE/QT applications
    10. Most Java based applications

Many other applications are known to work in the NX environment, though NX may not support all the features or offer the same level of performance offered by the officially supported applications.

As part of the development process, NoMachine improves the compatibility, resolves the known issues and extends the product at any new NX release. Applications that might be not supported in a previous version, may work well once a new revision is made available. Nevertheless, due to the significant amount of time and effort required by testing and debugging the NX software, NoMachine can't guarantee that all bugs can be fixed and that applications not listed here can be made to work under the provision of the normal NX support. It's therefore important that, before buying the product, you verify that NX fullfills all your requirements, including the ability to work with the specific applications you intend to use. NoMachine offers free downloads of the client and an evaluation version of the NX server to help users determine if it is the case. NoMachine can't be considered responsible for malfunctions and incompatibilites affecting applications that are not explicitly listed. If there is any application that is critical to you, and you want to see support for this application added, or you are concerned about the ability of the NX software to fit in your business environment, NoMachine or its network of partners can work with you on a contractual basis. Please, don't hesitate to contact our sales department for more information.

Technology Brief
Data encryption and security

NX security is guaranteed at every layer involved in the communication process. NX uses SSH public-key encryption and 128 bit volatile random cookie generation.

Multimedia support

NX transparently tunnels Linux multimedia channels. Not only does NX play KDE and Gnome system sounds, but you can listen to MP3s played on the server and local workstation simultaneously.

Unified support for all major remote desktop protocols

Thanks to its outstanding compression performances, NX is able to deliver X, RDP and RFB remote sessions using the same client. This is achieved by translating "foreign" protocols into X-Window, the native protocol of NX.

NX Distributed Computing Architecture

Behind NoMachine software is the NX Distributed Computing Architecture, a suite of Open Source technologies and commercial tools, designed by NoMachine to make network computing as easy and widespread as Web browsing. NoMachine has built the foundations of its NXDCA on two well known and widely used open standards, SSH and the X-Window System, the windowing system which is behind the Graphical User Interfaces of Linux and the Unix Operating System.
