With NoMachine NX, NoPC Expands Revolutionary Desktop Computing Solution

2010-11-09 by: Katie Glossner

NoMachine NX plays an important role in providing schools in the developing country of Grenada with first-ever computing technology

Rome, Italy, Nov. 9, 2010 –   NoMachine, creator and global provider of secure remote access, desktop and application delivery software, is partnering with NoPC to assist in making computing resources available to schools in Grenada. NoMachine's NX is the key connection technology providing students and teachers with access to a desktop, Web browser, e-mail and other important applications stored on the data center in St. George.

Using NX technology, like in Tanzania, NoPC has provided inadequately funded schools in Grenada with computing capabilities that they normally couldn't even imagine. Using NoPC thin client terminals in the classroom as PC substitutions creates the energy and cost-efficient solution required and reduces the need for maintenance, support and upgrades. High failure components are eliminated and five workstations use under 100 watts.

Similarly to the Tanzania project, NX provides access to the computing resources stored on the data center,  but in Grenada instead of using the mobile network, due to poor coverage, to make the connection, they use broadband which is essentially transmitted via a copper wire. NX is especially beneficial in this environment permitting access even over limited bandwidth with unique compression and caching features.

With NX providing remote access, students and teachers in Grenada now have access to Edubuntu desktops running on Linux and programs that serve as educational tools that allow for collaboration with other schools around the world and provide new resources for studying and communicating.

This was the second computing solution NoPC provided to a developing area, the first being to Tanzania in East Africa. NoPC aims to increase and improve the access and quality of education in the developing world by making computing resources available to them. Using thin clients and NX to remotely access the desktop and applications in the data center makes this solution possible for them, keeping energy and hardware costs to a minimum.

NoPC hopes to provide this solution with the help of NoMachine and other partners to a growing number of developing areas around the world. Striving to increase student attendance and classroom engagement, each school is offered Edubuntu, an Open Source software package specifically designed for the classroom. Given their own username and password, students are encouraged to use these computers and all the new resources they provide to support their studies. Teachers also have access to critical information and can continue professional development through online resources.

NoPC believes the challenges the lack of resources creates for these areas can be overcome through the effective use of technology. NoMachine NX is a vital part of the solution providing students and teachers with desktop and application delivery from the back end servers in the data center giving them access to a whole new world of educational tools and resources.
