Configuring How You View the Remote Desktop

Start your journey to the next level of network computing

NoMachine displays the remote desktop according to the preferences you have enabled with 'Enable viewport mode', 'Scale to window' or 'Resize remote display' options, which are always accessible via the icons from within the session menu. Sometimes, however, the user might prefer to explicitly resize the remote desktop so that it better uses the available space to their specific needs on the client screen. This can be done via the 'Resolution' slider (Ctrl-Alt-0 > Display > Display settings).

Go to 'Display' inside the NoMachine session

  • Connect to the remote computer.
  • Open the NoMachine session menu (Ctrl-Alt-0 or page-peel) to view the options available.
  • 'Scale to window' displays desktop content to fit the session window. Resize remote display' changes the geometry of the remote desktop to the current size of the NoMachine window. Some limitations might apply to a physical desktop session since the remote graphical adapter supports a limited set of resolutions. 'Enable viewport mode' shows the session in 1:1 ratio. It is the default setting for virtual desktop sessions. When it is enabled, if the remote desktop is bigger than the window size, moving the cursor to the edges of the window moves the viewport.
  • For custom resolution options, click on 'Change settings'.

Set a standard or custom resolution

  • NoMachine indicates the standard resolution options found on the server-side list of supported dimensions, matching the current resolution aspect ratio. Move the slider according to your preference (Fig. 2).
  • If your preferred resolution is not there, you can set a different geometry among the ones supported by your system.
  • Additionally, in remote desktop sessions to multi-monitor set-ups, you can even set a custom resolution ad hoc per display. If multiple monitors are detected, small monitor icons show up on the right. Select the monitor to set its resolution.

Some useful tips

  • When you connect to the desktop, a further option 'Ask the desktop resolution upon connecting' asks if and how you prefer to resize the desktop every time you connect (see fig. 3).
