Setting Up NoMachine Cluster

Start your journey to the next level of network computing

A NoMachine failover cluster is a pair of Enterprise Cloud Server Cluster hosts or two Enterprise Terminal Server Cluster hosts that work together to maintain high available access to the centralized infrastructure. It is an active-active cluster where the cluster master and slave roles can be switched between the primary and secondary servers. The master has two roles: it is the access point for NoMachine user connections to desktop nodes and is also in charge of load-balancing the session negotiation between itself and the slave. Each of the cluster products comes with an intuitive interface to guide administrators through the initial set-up of the cluster pair. This tutorial will take you through the basic steps using the GUI. For additional details about installation and advanced configuration of NoMachine cluster products, consult the Enterprise Terminal Server Cluster and Enterprise Cloud Server Cluster guides.

Access the cluster settings

  • Install NoMachine Enterprise Cloud Server Cluster or NoMachine Enterprise Terminal Server Cluster on both of your server hosts.
  • Go to the host which will act as the Primary Server. You can be on the host physically or you can connect to it using the 'Server admin' utility from any NoMachine Player provided your NoMachine account has administrator rights.
  • Access the Cluster panel. You can do this either from the Welcome panel by selecting 'Configure this cluster' (see fig. 1) or going directly to the NoMachine settings and selecting 'Cluster' on the left of the panel.

Configure the cluster

  • Select 'Status' and click 'Configure it now' (fig. 3).
  • Or you can go directly to 'Ports' to configure your primary and secondary hosts.
  • Click on 'Configure'.

  • Here you insert the IP addresses or the Machine Ids of the primary and secondary hosts that will make up the cluster. Primary and Seconday IP addresses are bound to the network card of the host. The two nodes of the cluster pair must be on the same LAN.
  • The next step is to set the IP addresses that users will use to connect to the cluster. Click on the 'Configure' button next to the Master and Slave fields (fig. 5).
  • Insert administrator credentials when prompted.

  • Insert the IP addresses to use for the Master/Slave servers. Choose IP addresses which are not already in use on your LAN.
  • NoMachine automatically shows the Netmask and Interface details that will be used to allocate master and slave IPs. Change these to your needs (fig. 6).
  • When you're done, click on the back button in the top left corner.

  • You will be taken back to the initial 'Cluster configuration' page.
  • If the IP addresses and subnet details are correct, click 'Apply' (fig. 7).
  • If you need to make any changes afterwards, just proceed to Cluster settings > Ports > Cluster ports and select 'Edit' (fig. 8).
  • Clicking 'Apply' prompts the restart of the cluster hosts in order to apply the configuration, so if you connected using the server admin, you will be disconnected and you will have to connect again.

  • At this stage, if you wish, you can add your cluster to NoMachine Network. Click the link 'Add this cluster to NoMachine Network' now and proceed to the next section.
  • Otherwise go back Cluster servers in Settings > Cluster > Status. The Status details will be updated with the details you inserted in the previous steps.

Add the NoMachine cluster to Network

  • Adding the cluster to NoMachine Network is simple and can be done in just a few clicks. Doing so avoids firewall or router reconfiguration to allow access to desktop nodes for users connecting from outside your corporate network.
  • Open the NoMachine Player, got to Settings, click Network from the left-hand menu and select Machine.
  • Click on the 'Add' button next to the sentence 'This cluster is not available on NoMachine Network' (fig. 9).

  • The system generates a Machine Id for both Master and Slave servers and also an Access Id for the Cluster (fig. 10).
  • Users will connect to the cluster using the Master Machine Id and Access Id. Communicate this information to your users.
  • Make sure all users who connect using the Machine Id have created their Network User Id and are in possession of a Network Subscription.
