Sharing files between computers with NoMachine

Start your journey to the next level of remote computing

Photos, music and documents are quickly shared between local and remote computers, including from attached USB devices. You can transfer files easily and securely between the local and remote desktop through firewalls, and we don't place any limitations on the size of files you want to transfer. To send files both ways, you will need NoMachine installed as illustrated here. Read on to find out how to send and grab files.

How to transfer files from the remote computer

Downloading a file to the local computer

Step 1: Connect to the remote computer

  • Start a connection from your computer or device to the remote computer you want to access. If necessary, consult the Getting Started Guide on how to start a NoMachine connection to the remote desktop.
  • Click on the !M icon on the remote desktop to bring up the menu.

Step 2: Choose the file you want to transfer

  • Click on 'Transfer a file'.
  • Click on 'Download file from the server' to transfer a file to the device from which you are connecting (Fig. 2).

  • The explorer of the remote machine will pop up to allow you to navigate the folders to select the file you want to transfer (Fig. 3).

Step 3: Choose the destination folder

  • Next a second dialog will pop up to let you choose the destination folder on your local PC or Mac where you want to save the file which you are about to transfer (Fig. 4).

Step 4: File transfer complete

  • You're done!
  • You can now access the newly transferred file on your local computer by selecting 'Show transfer status' from the !M system tray icon (Fig. 5).

How to transfer files from the local computer

Uploading a file to the remote computer

Step 1: Connect to the remote computer

  • Start a connection from your device to the remote computer.
  • Click on the !M icon on the remote desktop to bring up the menu (Fig. 6).

Step 2: Choose the file you want to transfer

  • Click on 'Transfer a file'.
  • Click on 'Upload file from the client' (Fig. 7).

  • The local file manager/explorer will pop up to allow you to navigate the folders of your local computer to select the file you want to transfer (Fig. 8).

Step 3: Choose the destination folder

  • Next, a second dialog will pop up to let you choose the destination folder on the remote PC or Mac where you want to save the file which you are about to transfer (Fig. 9).

Step 4: File transfer complete

  • You're done!
  • You can now access the newly transferred file on the remote computer by selecting 'Show transfer status' from the !M system tray icon (Fig. 10).
